Ingredients

Scale
  • 225g (1 cup) unsalted butter, softened
  • 110g (1/2 cup) granulated sugar
  • 340g (2 3/4 cups) all-purpose flour
  • Pinch of salt
  • 397g (1 can) sweetened condensed milk
  • 115g (1/2 cup) unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons golden syrup (or corn syrup)
  • Pinch of salt
  • 200g (7 oz) milk chocolate (or dark chocolate)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • Green candy melts, sprinkles, and edible stars for decoration (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line a square baking pan.
  • For the shortbread: Cream together softened butter and sugar. Add flour and salt. Mix until just combined. Press into the prepared pan and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until lightly golden.
  • For the caramel: In a saucepan, combine sweetened condensed milk, butter, golden syrup, and salt. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until thickened and golden brown (about 10-15 minutes).
  • Pour the caramel over the cooled shortbread and spread evenly. Let it set completely (2-3 hours at room temperature or 1-2 hours in the refrigerator).
  • For the chocolate topping: Melt chocolate with vegetable oil. Pour over the set caramel and spread evenly. Decorate with green candy melts, sprinkles, and edible stars to create Christmas tree shapes.
  • Let the chocolate set completely. Cut into triangle tree shapes and serve.
